THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT CRYPTOCURRENCY

 Cryptocurrency is a form of digital money that exists only online. It uses advanced encryption technology, known as cryptography, to keep transactions secure and protect users from fraud. Unlike traditional currencies such as the Nepalese Rupee or the US Dollar, which are issued and controlled by governments or central banks, most cryptocurrencies operate on decentralized networks using blockchain technology. 

This means transactions are recorded on a shared digital ledger and verified by a network of computers rather than a single central authority.


HISTORY OF CRYPTO

The idea of cryptocurrency didn't begin with Bitcoin. Long before Bitcoin became famous, several computer scientists were already trying to create a form of digital money that could be used online without relying on banks.

The journey started in 1983, when computer scientist David Chaum introduced the concept of eCash. His goal was to create a digital payment system that would protect users' privacy and allow secure online transactions. Although eCash never became widely adopted, it laid the foundation for the digital currencies we know today.

Years later, in 1998, cryptographer Wei Dai proposed b-money, a vision for a decentralized digital currency that could operate without a central authority. While b-money was never developed into a working currency, its ideas inspired future innovations and played an important role in shaping modern cryptocurrencies.

How Is Cryptocurrency Made?

At first, cryptocurrency might sound complicated, but the basic idea is actually quite simple.

Imagine a notebook that records every money transaction. Instead of being kept by a bank, copies of this notebook are stored on thousands of computers around the world. This digital notebook is called a blockchain.

Whenever someone sends cryptocurrency, the transaction is checked by these computers. If everything is correct, the transaction is grouped with others into a block. Once the block is verified, it is added to the blockchain. Because every computer has a copy of the blockchain, it is very difficult for anyone to change or cheat the system.

But where do new cryptocurrencies come from?

For cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, new coins are created through a process called mining. Thousands of powerful computers compete to solve a difficult mathematical puzzle. The first computer to solve it gets the chance to add the next block to the blockchain. As a reward for helping keep the network secure, it receives newly created bitcoins.

Not every cryptocurrency uses mining. Some, such as Ethereum, use a different method called Proof of Stake. Instead of solving puzzles, people lock up some of their cryptocurrency to help verify transactions. In return, they earn rewards.

In simple words, cryptocurrency is built using three main things:

  • Blockchain – a digital record that stores every transaction.

  • Cryptography – special security technology that keeps your money safe.

  • A network of computers – thousands of computers work together to verify transactions instead of relying on a single bank or company.

This is what makes cryptocurrency different from traditional money. No single bank or government controls it. Instead, it runs on technology and a global network of computers working together.
